Home security is an important factor for many homeowners. It is, in fact, one of the main reasons they have fences put up around their property. Several fencing types work well for security fencing. However, wrought iron is especially suited for the purpose. Indeed, it's probably one of the oldest forms of security fencing around. Wrought iron fencing hits the points needed in good security fencing.
Wrought Iron Is Exceptionally Strong
The first priority of a home security fence is that it must be strong. A fence would serve little purpose if would-be intruders could just push it over.
Wrought iron fences are probably the strongest fences on the market. Manufacturers start with a strong metal, iron or steel, for all components of the fence. They then weld all the components together to make the panels. Therefore, the panels essentially feature no weak areas.
Once the fence contractors have installed the fence, usually by setting the posts in concrete, the fence is virtually impossible to push over. What's more, would-be intruders could neither break parts of the fence nor cut through it to try and access your property.
Wrought Iron Fences Are Hard to Climb
Would-be intruders use another method to access a property - they try to climb over the fence rather than go through it. Indeed, an attempt to climb a fence is probably faster and easier than trying to break it.
Homeowners have many different styles of wrought iron from which to choose. Some styles feature a lot of curves and medallions, which might give would-be intruders a foothold. However, the standard style features straight pickets. Intruders would have difficulty gripping the smooth pickets to climb, and they wouldn't have anywhere to put their feet.
For increased security, homeowners could approach the fencing as they would for a swimming pool. Those guidelines hold that the pickets should be no more than four inches apart to minimize the ability of someone to scale the fence.
Wrought Iron Fences Feature Open Construction
Sometimes homeowners think privacy fencing can offer the best method of security. Privacy fencing does serve as a deterrent because would-be intruders can't see into your yard for items to potentially steal. However, closed-off privacy fencing also does conceal the activities of would-be intruders.
Wrought iron fences offer completely open construction. Even with the pickets placed close together, no one will be able to hide their actions behind the fence. If someone did manage to scale the fence, they'd be immediately obvious on your property. Naturally, you should keep the fence clear of landscaping and other barriers to enjoy this benefit.
An added benefit of this open construction is the fence itself doesn't present a sightline barrier. Security fences should be tall as a further deterrent. You can build a wrought iron fence as tall as local regulations allow and still not feel walled into your property.
Wrought Iron Fences Are Intimidating
The purpose of a security fence is to deter would-be intruders from even attempting to break into your property. They will stay away from properties with fences that look dangerous.
Wrought iron fences offer an advantage over almost any other fencing style because of how the panels are finished. Classic wrought iron fences feature finials at the top of the pickets that extend beyond the top rail. These finials can be highly decorative, but they usually end in a sharp point. You can even choose finial styles that branch out with more points.
Obviously, a would-be intruder would look at such a fence and see that it would be very difficult to climb. And if they did scale it, they'd be met with sharp metal finials on top.
