What You Should Know About ADA Compliant Railings

It’s not only important but also law that you make your business premises handicap accessible and safe. The most common ways to accomplish this are through wheelchair ramps, wide doors and handicap stalls in the restrooms. Be sure to add railings to the list. Where to Install Them

Railings are metal fences that offer protection and support. The places where you must install handicap railings include:

  • Stairways and ramps
  • Porches and balconies
  • Docks and piers
  • Trails for pedestrians
Usually these are located outside, but stairs and ramps may reside within the building as well. They will need railings, too. Railings must be on all sides of the area, and can’t have any breaks in continuation.

What Kind to Install

The ADA requires that the rails be 34 to 38 inches high, and 36 inches from one side to the other. For places that mostly serve children, the maximum height is 28 inches.
